Who Are Gen Z and Gen Alpha?

For Gen Z and Gen Alpha, gaming isn’t just a hobby—it is a way of life. Compared to the total online population, video games are in the top 3 entertainment source for both generations, followed by social networks and streaming services.

What Do They Play?

These young gamers embrace a diverse array of games, with mobile being on top of their preferences. They conduct most of their transactions on mobile phones, including in-game purchases. Despite the absence of bank accounts and credit cards, Gen Z and Gen Alpha are more likely to spend money on video games. The rise of free-to-play (F2P) games in recent years correlates to the rise of in-game purchases particularly among Gen Z and Gen Alpha, whose purchases of gears, playable characters or heroes, and in-game currencies are a given. Game publishers and developers, especially of F2P titles, need to create worthwhile opportunities for these generations to part ways with their (or their parent’s) money. Striking the balance for such opportunities in-game without negatively impacting gameplay will continue to be a primary consideration as we move further away from Pay-to-Play games.

What Is the Future of Gaming With Gen Z and Gen Alpha?

The future of gaming is undeniably intertwined with the aspirations and preferences of Gen Z and Gen Alpha. According to Newzoo, while the pandemic initially fueled the surge of video games as a preferred avenue for social interactions, the aftermath of the pandemic doesn’t diminish the lasting impact.

With the added convenience of payment methods such as DCB, which simplifies their gaming experience, these generations perceive social features and the streamlined payment method in games as crucial contributors to their overall gaming experience. This not only solidifies gaming as a cultural phenomenon but also positions it as a focal point for brands, a social outlet, and a defining element of their identity.
