The development of 5G in the Kingdom promises many untapped opportunities for telecom service providers.

Kuala Lumpur – Despite the economic turmoil caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, the Kingdom of Cambodia is pushing the rollout of faster fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks by year-end. In a news report by The Phnom Penh Post, as part of the government’s plan to move the Kingdom closer to a digital economy, the Ministry of Information has agreed to release the 700MHz band to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to help it develop the 5G network.

With the total mobile connections in the country stood at 21.4 million in Q1 2020  Cambodia sees strong potential in 5G adoption up to 1.6 million connections by 2025 along with as many as 24.3 million mobile connections. Marketing and Business Development Country Manager Vatanak Sok said: “Given the continued growth in the number of smartphone connection in the Kingdom of Cambodia over the past decade, 5G connection inevitably plays an important role in shaping subscribers’ consumption behaviour towards speed, accessibility and flexibility.”

“With 4G, we’ve seen the potential of being connected—exemplifying the way we currently use smartphones to communicate, work, study, socialize, shop, transport and perform some routine activities. There, however, remains the question of speed and security which 5G is set to address, and positively enhance these behaviours, adding more values to end customers.”

The rollout of 5G mobile network in the Kingdom will likely see a leap in digital content subscriptions such as video streaming and gaming content. With 5G, Cambodian MNOs are able to deliver mobile bandwidth, reach and low latency to their subscribers, enabling access to high definition video content and more gaming content, particularly online/cloud gaming. This will see potential growth in esports tournament participation over the next few years.

“As a scalable mobile platform provider, we mainly target to onboard Forest’s services through telecom companies, bringing multimedia content and game to the market. On top of that, we have presented automated and unified systems to major telecom companies in the Kingdom, intended to support the expansion and management of VAS for telecom companies,” Vatanak explained.

Forest Interactive has begun rolling out Forest’s B2B and B2C portals, allowing users and intermediary channels to interact and purchase game vouchers via local payment options at their doorstep. “Deals are set in place with a few companies thus we expect to start showing presence in the country as early as Q3 2020.”
